disconnection from #tildetown on inactivity

The #tildetown IRC channel now auto-disconnects clients which have not been seen active in the channel in one week. This is done to reduce the number of users active on that channel who never talk, in hopes of providing a more comfortable and private experience for chatters. If you've been kicked from #tildetown, you can always rejoin the channel at any point by entering /join #tildetown.

Does this mean I am expected to talk more in the channel?
In short, no. The intended effect isn't to make #tildetown more active, but rather to make the user list reflect who is actually online and not just persistent.
The functionality was put in place as a potential way to disconnect townies who are always connected but never talk — people nobody knows. Unfortunately there is no good way to distinguish those folks from people who are often in the chatroom but don't talk as much. The arbitrary line we set makes it so seven days of inactivity causes you to be disconnected from the channel — we hope that that's enough leeway for quieter townies to still talk on occasion without being kicked. If you find yourself being kicked, you can rejoin immediately! If it happens often, tell us — maybe we should make this grace period longer.
How can I get the context for a discussion I joined in the middle of?
The IRC server that we use, Ergo, has a lot of history retrieval functionality. If your bouncer/client supports IRCv3's CHATHISTORY specification, it should work out of the box with Ergo. Otherwise, two things you can do:
- Manually on rejoin, you can ask the server for history using
/quote HISTORY #tildetown 30m(for e.g. thirty minutes, or a number of messages if there is no unit) - Weechat (the client
town chatuses) can retrieve all unread history for you: (thank you to ~noelle for the tip)
