The National Archives

The National Archives (TNA), which covers England, Wales and the United Kingdom, was formed in April 2003 by bringing together the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission. It is responsible for preserving the records of central government and the courts of law, and giving public access to open records, and to the appropriate government departments where they are closed. The collection is one of the largest in the world and spans an unbroken period from the 11th century to the present day. TNA operates the UK public records system and lies at the centre of the national archival network, which covers archive services and other institutions holding official and private archival material of public interest.
