Cameras & Film

This is a brief overview of the tools and workflow behind the photography on this site.

Everything is shot exclusively on 35mm film. The primary tools are two highly portable compact cameras: the Olympus mju for quick, sharp snaps, and the incredible Olympus XA for full manual control. Portability is key.

My preferred film stock is Ilford XP2 Super. As a black-and-white film processed in standard color chemicals (C-41), it offers great exposure latitude, scans beautifully, and delivers a smooth, classic look.

Analog to Digital

Negatives are digitized using a Reflecta CrystalScan 7200 with Digital ICE dust removal.

To capture every nuance, the raw sensor data is stored in 16-bit grayscale TIFFs. This retains 65,536 shades of gray per pixel, preserving immense detail in the shadows and keeping gradients incredibly smooth.

These raw scans are then developed in darktable. I use this excellent open-source software to dial in the black and white points and subjectively perfect the contrast.

Finally, the mighty ImageMagick prepares the images for the web. Focus is on high visual quality, crisp grain, and rich, deep shades of gray. Visitors using Safari on an Apple XDR display are served 16-bit JPEG XL files for maximum tonal depth. Alternatively, well-saturated 10-bit AVIF files are on view, delivering beautifully dense, velvety blacks.
