Seventeen Ways the Level Ends

28 April 2021

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s waiting palm. A number of possibilities play out and they’re all forestalled. The demon king twists out a long, fearful frown. You’re alone with him in the final chamber of the world, and he alone holds all the cards.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s jaw. It crumbles into carbon-black pulp, slick as used tissue paper. Then it reforms around your fingers. You’re trapped in his teeth, he’s trapped around your fist, and the shape of his wound is an elongated smile.

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s collarbone. He’s never considered it a weak spot, and neither have you. Chalk it up to a lucky miss. In the moment before impact you feel the bone rotate beneath the skin. He’s winding up into a punch. It’s strangely exhilarating.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s forearm. It’s obvious this shouldn’t be a weak point. This is where he braces for impact. This is where he casts all the spells. He puts all of his strength here. You should know that. You follow through.

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s upper back. By all accounts this is a difficult position to be in. He slumps over his dinner table, one eye on his knife. One eye on the reflection in the knife. As he falls he turns around. This has never been a fair fight.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s lower back. You’ve got him on the ropes now. He’s stuck in a windup animation, face cast to the sky, casting a spell somewhere on the edge of your vision, hitbox flickering faster than your eyes can see. Just what could he be looking at? Just what future lies in store?

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s guts. Viscera cloud your judgment and you overshoot the landing. It’s gone too far, you think. He's lost everything, you’re all out of touch. He’s turned away by the possibility of defeat.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s liver. You catch him in the windup animation. The same thing again, but slower. You realise he’s turned away by the possibility of you.

- NEUTRAL END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s unprotected crotch. The comedic factor outweighs the significance of this event. In another circumstance this could be a new beginning. In other circumstances the game breaks again. You realise that turning tragedy into comedy needs more time.

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the pause button. Suspended in midair, all things appear insignificant. The clouds around the chamber of the world are just a tiled texture. The demon king’s a hitbox on strings. Your fist is just a name.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s health bar.

- ??? END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s name. No dice.

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the rim of chamber of the world. The music stops. The game has always rewarded direct action but nobody knows how to play. Player behaviour is discouraged outside of pre-established bounds. For once, the demon king acts confused.

- GOOD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s medial cuneiform bone. Do either of you even know where that is? Clumsy, clumsy: we fall towards each other only to swing and swing and miss. You ragdoll into the chamber floor. Looking up, you finally see the stars.

- PACIFIST END: The demon king forgives you. This is as close to an ending as you’re going to get. He embraces you but you have no rigging for it, only an improvised scripted grab. It’s tender where his model clips through your waist. Your fist collides with the demon king’s face.

- BAD END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s third eye. All kinds of futures flash before your eyes. Betrayal, hope, revenge, thirst, want, and love. You flinch a second too late. Consider getting a refund. Perhaps this genre isn’t for you.

- TRUE END: Your fist connects with the demon king’s bright, shining heart.
