Thoughts and Opinions
Set in the early to mid 16th century, mostly in southern France, Spain, and Switzerland, it's about a young woman who was a multi-time slave from North Africa, her 'master', a rich Egyptian(?) woman, a necromancer, an a mercenary artist.
The young woman ultimately escapes being a slave to end up as an apprentice to a necromancer. He plays the long game in training her to become the officator in his plan for longevity so he can basically take over her body.
There's a bit of twisted and weird romance, might not be for the easily sicked by what is essentially necromancy through cannabalism, some light necophilia, and plenty of graphic violence.
Oh, and I think there are vampires, though the author never actually explicitly says so. It's implied.
It's a standalong story that cites it's references for historical accuracy at the end. I think that is really neat.
I was genuinely a bit sad when it came to an end. It's a stand alone story instead of a series, but the character development is solid, the story is engaging, doesn't drag on, and kept me guessing.
This book also reminded me of the game Pentiment which is also set in the early to mid 16th century. That game has sources cited for historical references for accuracy, custom fonts, and an engaging story. No necromancy. But this book, at least the print version I got has some interesting fonts for the cover and the headers, which I just appreciate.
Verdict
Would recommend.
