the ~molten home library
All the books at my house that I haven't read yet, in no particular order.
Mostly collected haphazardly from used bookstores, or received as gifts.
Now reading
- Tomorrow Will Be Different - Sarah McBride. Memoirs of a transgender political activist.
On deck
- Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami. Not sure how I missed this one when I read most of his others.
- Typhoon - Joseph Conrad.
- Artemis - Andy Weir. Dad said this was pretty good. We each got it for each other, Xmas 2017.
Short Stories
- Jesus' Son - Denis Johnson. Skipped around, not sure how many to go.
- Blow-up - Julio Cortázar. One more story to go.
- The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol. About halfway through.
- Italian Folktales - Italo Calvino. Perfectly bizarre bedtime stories.
- The Complete Cosmicomics - Italo Calvino. Not sure if short stories or novel.
- Sherlock Holmes in America - various mystery novelists. Read about half of them at the beach one summer.
Plays
- The Tempest - Wm. Shakespeare.
Novels
Postmodern/Literary
- The Museum of Eterna's Novel (The First Good Novel) - Macedonio Fernández. Strange, interesting book, by a friend of Borges. Read about half of it, but would need to start over.
- White Noise - Don DeLillo.
- Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace. Actually read about a third of this back in high school, but would need to start over. Got frustrated with the floppy unweildy paperback for refering to all the footnotes.
- Black Swan Green - David Mitchell.
- The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - David Mitchell. I really liked Cloud Atlas, couldn't get into this one though.
Mystery/Thriller
- Moon Over SoHo - Ben Aaronovich. Second of the Rivers of London supernatural detective stories. First one (Midnight Riot) was pretty entertaining.
- Cuba Libre - Elmore Leonard.
- Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy - John Le Carre.
Comedy/Romance
- To Say Nothing of the Dog - Connie Willis. Maybe the British humor is going over my head. Can't seem to get into this one.
- The Pleasure of my Company - Steve Martin. His other novel Shopgirl was pretty good.
- Sovereign - April Daniels. Second in the Dreadnaught trans teen superhero series.
- Almost Perfect - Brian Katcher. A trans teen romance.
- The Karaoke Singer's Guide to Self Defense - Tim Kinsella. Read the beginning. Maybe he should stick to songwriting.
Classics
- Notes from Underground - Fyodor Dostoevsky.
- Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy.
- Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison. Received from secret santa forever ago.
- Snow Country - Yasunari Kawabata.
- Howards End. E.M. Forester. A Vintage Books paperback edition, once owned by "Monk" Malloy.
- Green Mansions - W.H. Hudson.
- Nostromo - Joseph Conrad.
- You Can't Go Home Again - Thomas Wolfe. Read half a while ago, would need to restart.
- Light in August - William Faulkner.
- Robinson Crusoe - Daniel Defoe.
Fantasy
- Snuff - Terry Pratchett. Not sure if this is a good starting point in Discworld.
- Mistborn - Brendon Sanderson. Read the first chapter multiple times, couldn't get into it. Also the book smells weird.
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs. Haven't saw the movie, either.
- Hollow City - Ransom Riggs. The sequel to above.
- The Eye of the World - Robert Jordan. First of the Wheel of Time series, recommended by Mindy B. I'm feeling kind of intimidated to start such a long series, especially when the consensus online is that it's kind of long winded and full of filler.
- The Great Hunt - Robert Jordan. Book 2.
- The Dragon Reborn - Robert Jordan. Book 3.
- King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table - Roger Lancelyn Green.
Scifi
- The Songs of Distant Earth - Arthur C. Clarke.
- Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams.
- Time Enough for Love - Robert Heinlein.
- The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey. Saw part of the movie and found it meh. Also my sister said the sequels weren't as good.
- The Infinite Sea - Rick Yancey. See above.
- Wild Animus - Rick Shapero. Someone randomly gave this to me when I was walking on campus.
- The Martian - Andy Weir. Saw the movie, was bored.
Philosophy/Essays
- Selected Dialogs of Plato.
- The Collected Oscar Wilde.
- Whipping Girl - Julia Serano.
Nonfiction
- Physics of the Future - Michio Kaku.
- The Dancing Bees - Tania Munz.
- On Trails - Robert Moore.
- The Invention of Nature - Andrea Wulf. Story of A. Humboldt.
- The Innovators - Walter Isaacson.
- Leonardo Da Vinci - Walter Isaacson.
- The Idea Factory - Jon Gertner. Story of Bell Labs. I read part of this, I think.
- Number Freak - Derrick Niederman.
- Delusions of Gender - Cordelia Fine. She had a conclusion, and found plenty of evidence to support it. Got tiring after first couple chapters.
- The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.
- The Ancient Engineers - L. Sprague de Camp
- The Zombie Survival Guide - Max Brooks.
- Soonish - Kelly and Zach Weinersmith. From the creator of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
