poems I wrote at primary school =============================== When I was in year three I wrote a poem I knew it was a poem 'cuz it rhymed It had multiple stanzas, And thesaurus language, But when my teacher read it, she said it Was bad and I'd wasted my time. I'd worked really hard writing that poem (And I knew it was a poem, 'cuz it rhymed) Well naturally I started blubbin' But my teacher didn't say nothin' She was too caught up counting the syllables Of all my poem's lines. She said that poems don't have choruses You're mixing them with a song. You've tried I guess, but nonetheless, You've gone and got it wrong! I told her, Mine had a chorus, she said Well then it's a song, And ever since, I've come to the defence Of poems that don't belong. When I was in year four I wrote a poem I knew it was a poem 'cuz it had fourteen lines A perfectly good sonnet, but My teacher looked down on it After she counted the syllables, And only found nine. Now I'd worked really hard writing that poem (And I knew it was a poem, 'cuz it had fourteen lines) But my teacher laughed at me, Said no-one'll take me seriously If I didn't have the common sense to do What's been proven time through time. She said that poems don't have choruses You're mixing them with a song. You've tried I guess, but nonetheless, You've gone and got it wrong! I told her, Mine had a chorus, she said Well then it's a song, And ever since, I've come to the defence Of poems that don't belong. When I was in year five I wrote a poem And I knew it was a poem 'cuz it used iambic pentameter Then my teacher had a skim, Told me that it was pretty thin On actual content I said so were the romantics, but it Didn't seem to sink in. See, I'd worked really hard writing that poem (And I knew it was a poem 'cuz it used iambic pentameter) But my teacher shook my head, Said I should take up prose instead, But I'd done it twice, so I made it thrice, And decided to ignore her. 'Cuz we all know poems can have choruses, It doesn't make them a song. I tried my best, and had a success, I didn't get it wrong! I told her That all my poems were unique And it was her who'd got it wrong And so to end, that's my defence Of poems that don't belong.
