Descartes doubted everything he could doubt and kept only the doubting itself. How much of what you remember did you actually live, and how much did you inherit secondhand and relabel as yours?
The unsettling part isn't that memory is unreliable, or at least not alone. It's that a false memory, held with enough conviction, does the same causal work as a true one in shaping what you believe and how you respond to the world both passively and proactively.
