Hello and welcome to my blog! Chances are, if you're reading this, you already somewhat know who I am, but since this is the first post, I feel like I should write a few things about myself.
Hi! I'm Sanqui! Or also Sanky, the older variant which I still go by in many places. In English, my name generally pronounced like san(d)-key, but I don't mind other pronunciations. There is a story behind this name, but it's not very interesting. Rest assured, it has to do with Pokémon. Which brings me to the next obvious topic: my interests. Indeed, a lot of things in my life resolve around Pokémon. It is a passion, and while I love the games, characters, and music, I also love the fact that it brings people together. I have met countless great people and especially great friends through it. It's also fair to say Pokémon has played a big role in my interest in programming.
Pokémon is great and all, but my hobbies span beyond that. I love old computer hardware, and everything that goes with it. I enjoy studying old video games, including reverse engineering them, but also paying attention to the art styles (pixel art!) and music (chiptune!). My biggest abilities lie with the Nintendo Game Boy hardware right now.
I do sometimes play video games, too, but it's been a lot of years now since I started being more frugal about that. I barely play on my computer, and I prefer old and niche games over AAA titles, making exceptions for Nintendo games.
I am woefully uncultured in popular culture. I don't voluntarily watch movies or shows, and people still give me weird looks when they learn how little I know about The Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. Unfortunately, I've read very little books in my life as well, but that's something I actually feel bad about. I need to do more reading!
Not very long ago, I've grown to become a wannabe archivist. I care about internet culture and its preservation, and I jump at every opportunity to learn more about various subcultures. Most recently, this has resulted in me diving right into the world of MUDs, which are an early form of internet socialization through plain text virtual worlds.
Although my imagination is quite shallow, I dabble into creative pursuits, like art, music, or writing. I don't have much to show, but I've started making more serious attempts at pursuing each of these recently, a major one being the introduction of daily pixel art in my life. So far, this has been a mild success. At the cost of my sleep, if nothing else, I've at least become more efficient.
Which finally brings me to the purpose of this blog. Actually, I would like to keep it fairly open-ended, so there are multiple purposes.
Not unlike the spirit of NaBloPoMo, where you make a blog post every day of the month, I'm going to attempt to make a blog post every week of the year, probably on Sundays. I intend to write on topics that interest me, in the hopes that they might interest other people, too. I'll document my endeavors and my projects, which there are far too many of, so I can more easily introduce to people what I have going on. In each post, I'd also like to look back and summarize what I've worked on during the week. The idea is that I'll improve at writing and putting down my thoughts, and that I'll be motivated to work on more things so I can share them in the roundups. Of course, I also hope that the topics I'll cover will be of interest to some of you.
Standing at around 650 words, this post is hopefully at the short side. But I think I'll stop overthinking it and cut it here. See you next week, when I might talk about the sorts of music I enjoy listening to - but we'll see.
