08 january 2025

my emotional state has improved substantially

yesterday we had a checkin with our lawyer for bunk coop that went fantastic

i realized in the course of the video though that there were lots of weird little misbehaving things about my previous desktop setup, which was newish, and that they were impeding my ability to do some basic essential things like have video calls. so i redid some of the hardware and software setup of my desktop computer and it was very nice

i have the apartment to myself for a few days, i'm going to:

  1. vaccuum
  2. play loud music
  3. finish moving in to fresh desktop computer (today, absolutely essential)
  4. finish caddy podman configuration

volumes are a little different on podman it seems

gonna pause these updates for a bit. see you soon :)

06 january 2025

i went to catch up with a friend who lives in garren creek yesterday

we hadn't seen each other since helene. she and all her closest people are fine, but the general destruction out there was very bad. up the holler from her a lot of people died

i'm really glad she'd ok. it started a few days ago i think but i am definitely having a bout of overwhelm and sad feelings about helene

i'm gonna go to the arboretum with my partner today. hopefully i'll also take a nice bath

it's a low-computer time, things are hard

<3

05 january 2025

i'm not sure what today brings (emotionally)

i'm going to see my partner and also go to queer asheville computer club (qacc) ("quack")

but after that i don't know. i may just rest, or i may touch computer

03 january 2025

yesterday i hiked here in asheville for the first time since hurricane helene

hurricane helene was the most significant natural disaster in recorded history in this region and everyone's life is different now

i think that literally everyone here is substantially traumatized from it, and this is a very particular type of place as a result

the trail i hiked was in great shape, which is just amazingly reassuring. most of my go-to trails are closed since the storm

yesterday my website became a wiki. you can read at https://stillgreenmoss.net if you'd like

today i'm going to:

today is a big bunk coop day and i'm very happy for that

yesterday i went to my nearest library branch for the first time and it was amazing, so much seating and light. i'll go much more regularly

<3

02 january 2025

no slow morning for me this morning because i have to get out the door by a time

i did not manage to hike yesterday, but that is ok because it makes more sense to hike this morning and it is beautiful-clear-cold this morning

i'm going to hike on the trail very near me, which i haven't been on since helene. honestly have no idea what to expect

i drove through river arts district yesteday for the first time since, fuck

today i

yesterday jes made a post about blogs and wikis that i just immediately rang so true for that i felt ready to throw my beloved website into the sea immediately

bibliome was frustrating yesterday. i'm not actually working on bibliome on our bibliome evenings currently but on containerizing firestorm's ancient website. it's an important slog. but i made a new plan yesterday that i think i feel good about

i hope you breathe some especially good-feeling air today, bye <3

01 january 2025

good morning and happy year day

this is my first day without a 9-5 job in quite a few years

i quit my job to focus primarily on starting bunk computer cooperative with two collaborators here in asheville

but i'll also be able to focus much much more on other open source projects, local tech projects, engaging with local politics, etc. i'm still not sure what the balance of all those things will look like

imo the coolest open source project i get to work on is bibliome, which you can find at codeberg.org/bibliome/bibliome

bibliome is extremely lacking in public documentation, but it's a fully functional bookstore point-of-sale that multiple real life bookstores rely on to run their businesses right now

i don't write code for bibliome, that's libertie at codeberg.org/libertie, but i do do all of the sysadmin for bibliome (we run bibliome instances for some other bookstores), so all of the docker configuration and deployment automation and actual server maintenance is me

bibliome is beautiful and good, and it has no revenue motive

bunk computer coop is not so much an open source project as it is a small local business project, but we are producing open source code for sure. you can look at the public bunk repos at git.bunk.computer/bunk

there is so much to say about bunk, it's the main thing in my life right now. i don't think i actually plan to work on bunk stuff today, this will probably mostly be a day off, and then i'll work on bibliome in the evening

but one of my current focuses with bunk right now is migrating our existing infrastructure out of my bedroom servers onto hetzner, which is a bit of a slog but obviously essential, especially after our experience with helene here in asheville where we lost wired internet for about two weeks

the most nascent open source project i'm excited to work on is called "pulli" and it doesn't exist yet. this is a solo project for me and i'll write more about it soon

today i'm going to:

  1. visit my girlfriend at work
  2. walk in the woods
  3. do a chair errand (i got a new desk chair)
  4. maybe visit the folk art museum
  5. work on bibliome
  6. eat pasta

not in that order

i hope 2025 really is the year of the linux coop

<3

MIDDAY UPDATE chair is tomorrow actually, i forgor

31 december 2024

hello and happy new year :)

today is the last day of my job at ~computer company~. i put in notice two weeks ago

so i've come to tilde town and to this quiet feels posting place at an inflection point in my life

starting tomorrow, each day i wake up is mine to plan and make. that was already true, technically, but now it's true, more

i quit my job to work full time on starting a worker owned computer cooperative, right here in the place that i live in the western north carolina mountains

one way that i want to participate in tilde town is to come here (feels) every (most) morning(s) and make a post. about my feels, about my plans for the day, about recent achievements or setbacks, whatever

this terminal place is so quiet and peaceful. touching computer and the web in this way before touching it in all the loud ways each day, seems like it might be very grounding and good

these posts are meant to be read in a terminal using something like lynx. i'll glance at how they render in a browser but i'm not going to be too fussed unless they render poorly in lynx

i'll stop there, since i need to log on for my last day of work now

good luck be well <3
