Is having a barrier for entry a good thing? You basically need to know how to use cli and ssh to join the town.

This is like getting a ham radio license. Pass the trial of using a terminal text editor and you're in. You can hardly argue with the fact that using this platform is inconvenient. That in turn sets up a natural user filter in place. If I tell any of my friends that i'm posting here like that, they'd probably think I'm crazy.

But when there's no natural filter or moderation in place, social places on the web quickly become overpopulated and often lose their way in a pursuit of more growth. Think Reddit.

Web-convenience is king these days. You want the easiest onboarding process, Twitter login and an intuitive UI. Modern services are pretty great, but why do I miss the "old internet" so much?

Is it just nostalgia? Or has the web become this unfriendly place where people just shout at each other 24/7 and post pictures for likes? Or am I just getting old and bitter?

All of the above, probably.
