The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique

The 4-7-8 technique is a very simple, but effective method. I use it quite often if I feel on the verge of a panic attack or if I feel anxious in public.

To start, begin by sitting comfortably (preferably). Then:

  1. Breathe in through your nose fully for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold your breath for (preferably, but if you can only hold it for less, that's fine too.) 7 seconds.
  3. Slowly exhale through your lips for 8 seconds.
  4. Repeat until you feel calm.
