Hyde asks what's my opinion on the following - overrated or underrated?
- CCC
- Raspberry Pi
- Fedora
- Digital Minimalism
- Milkshakes
I've never done a post like that, but I like the spirit of his series. So here we go.
CCC
Underrated.
Ok, I don't have a lot to say about them, as I never associated with them or visited their conference in person, but I feel that they do a lot more good than bad to the computing landscape since they started. However, I do think that their ticket prices are quite expensive, especially when combined with a train (or plane!) ticket at a busy time of the year.
The people I talked to (even in person) did say that the conference was worthy, though.
Raspberry Pi
Underrated.
The hardware, that is.
When I purchased my first Pi4 in 2020, I wasn't really sure about what was in for me. A mini computer? An environment to study programming? A server? As it turned out, a bit of all the above! I started out trying to pick the right distro for it, but eventually settled on Debian. Then I started looking into sysadmin stuff and soon converted mine into a server and started to self-host my stuff.
And then I bought a really overpowered Pi4 8GB, overclocked it and discovered I could even run Microsoft Teams on it at work. But that was thanks to FreeBSD's way better performance on that hardware.
As for the foundation... they are pretty much a dick. And the reason why I won't buy the Pi5 or later.
Fedora
Overrated.
Meh, I never looked good wearing those things. How did Sinatra manage it?
Wait, you mean the distro?
Overrated, too. I never seriously gave it a try until this year, and that was only because my other distros of choice for it were not playing along well with my unremovable Secure Boot laptop. I feel that Fedora forces you a lot of stuff you might not want (no barebones, GUI-less install image? Have to choose DE?), picks some defaults different than my choices and has a weird repository-picking scheme that makes finding some of the software I need difficult.
It does have a pretty cutting-edge selection of software, and the updating process is rather solid. But all of this for... the experience that you'd get in Arch Linux? I'm choosing Arch, then.
Digital Minimalism
Underrated.
When did it become acceptable to watch movies bigger than 2GiB? When did the pictures you take with a digital camera become larger than 5MiB? And when did 128GB of storage become not enough for a Smartphone?
File bloat is real. Don't pay for extra cloud storage when everything is growing on purpose to occupy more space. Stay clean, kids!
Milkshakes
Overrated.
I never liked them, even back when as a kid. Plus, what a load of crap you're drinking. Like what, 95% excess fat and sugar? Truly an express lane for future health problems.
Also, kind of a weird thing to ask about? I wonder what inspired him to ask this quest-
Oh. Right.
Well, in the movie it was actually Sprite.
This post is number #61 of my #100DaysToOffload project.
