01 january 2025

good morning and happy year day

this is my first day without a 9-5 job in quite a few years

i quit my job to focus primarily on starting bunk computer cooperative with two collaborators here in asheville

but i'll also be able to focus much much more on other open source projects, local tech projects, engaging with local politics, etc. i'm still not sure what the balance of all those things will look like

imo the coolest open source project i get to work on is bibliome, which you can find at codeberg.org/bibliome/bibliome

bibliome is extremely lacking in public documentation, but it's a fully functional bookstore point-of-sale that multiple real life bookstores rely on to run their businesses right now

i don't write code for bibliome, that's libertie at codeberg.org/libertie, but i do do all of the sysadmin for bibliome (we run bibliome instances for some other bookstores), so all of the docker configuration and deployment automation and actual server maintenance is me

bibliome is beautiful and good, and it has no revenue motive

bunk computer coop is not so much an open source project as it is a small local business project, but we are producing open source code for sure. you can look at the public bunk repos at git.bunk.computer/bunk

there is so much to say about bunk, it's the main thing in my life right now. i don't think i actually plan to work on bunk stuff today, this will probably mostly be a day off, and then i'll work on bibliome in the evening

but one of my current focuses with bunk right now is migrating our existing infrastructure out of my bedroom servers onto hetzner, which is a bit of a slog but obviously essential, especially after our experience with helene here in asheville where we lost wired internet for about two weeks

the most nascent open source project i'm excited to work on is called "pulli" and it doesn't exist yet. this is a solo project for me and i'll write more about it soon

today i'm going to:

  1. visit my girlfriend at work
  2. walk in the woods
  3. do a chair errand (i got a new desk chair)
  4. maybe visit the folk art museum
  5. work on bibliome
  6. eat pasta

not in that order

i hope 2025 really is the year of the linux coop
